Google Gemini Free Access Changes From October 9

Google is changing how users access Gemini AI models from October 9, 2026. The update will make Gemini model availability more dependent on which Google AI plan a user has.

For free Gemini users, the biggest change is that access will be limited to the smaller Flash-Lite model. Previously, users could access a wider selection of Gemini models.

Google AI Plus users will still have access to Flash-Lite and the more powerful Flash model, but they will no longer have access to Gemini Pro models such as Gemini 3 Pro. Users who want access to the Pro models will need Google AI Pro or Google AI Ultra.

In India, Google AI Plus currently costs ₹399 per month, while Google AI Pro costs ₹1,950 per month and Google AI Ultra costs ₹6,500 per month, according to current reporting.

Google is also introducing more detailed model effort controls inside Gemini. Users will be able to choose different effort levels, with higher levels designed to provide more thorough answers but also consuming more of the available usage limit.

What does this mean for creators?

For AI creators who use Gemini for writing, research, coding, image generation or content planning, the change could affect which models they can use without paying.

A creator who currently relies on a more capable Gemini model may need to switch workflows, use Flash-Lite for simpler tasks, or consider a paid Google AI plan for more advanced work.

For students, the impact will depend on their account and plan. Students using Gemini for assignments, research, coding and study could notice differences in model availability and usage limits.

The bigger trend is that AI companies are increasingly separating their most capable models from free access. Instead of one model being available to everyone, users are being divided into different access levels based on their subscription.

This makes it more important for creators and students to understand exactly which AI model their plan provides before building their workflow around it.

The changes are scheduled to begin taking effect for users without an AI subscription on October 9, 2026. Google AI Plus subscribers will receive information about when the changes take effect for their accounts.
