AMD Ross: AI Agent Built for Embedded Engineers

AMD is pushing agentic AI beyond general-purpose chatbots with AMD Ross, a specialized AI assistant designed for embedded engineering.

Unlike a typical AI coding assistant, Ross is built specifically around AMD’s embedded development ecosystem. It can interact with supported AMD tools using natural language and help engineers move through different stages of the development process, from design and debugging to optimization and deployment.

The biggest idea behind Ross is its combination of four components: MCP servers, AMD’s Knowledge Base, expert-authored agent skills and ready-to-run design examples.

MCP servers allow the AI agent to connect with supported AMD development tools and interact with tool sessions. The AMD Knowledge Base gives the system access to validated technical documentation. Expert-authored agent skills provide structured workflows for engineering tasks, while design examples show how those workflows can be applied to real projects.

Ross can help with tasks such as hardware and software partitioning, hardware debugging, timing analysis, Vitis HLS optimization, machine-learning optimization, power optimization and embedded software development.

For example, an engineer can use natural language to investigate an error, search technical documentation, check tool information or work through an optimization workflow instead of manually searching through large amounts of documentation.

AMD also says Ross is client-agnostic, meaning developers can use their preferred compatible IDE, command-line environment and large language model while connecting to AMD’s embedded development tools.

The bigger trend is important: generic AI agents are becoming domain-specific AI agents.

The formula is simple:

LLM + MCP tools + trusted knowledge + expert workflows = specialized AI agent

This approach could become increasingly important in engineering, healthcare, finance, cybersecurity and other industries where generic AI knowledge alone is not enough.

AMD Ross is currently available, with AMD planning additional embedded tools and workflow capabilities on a monthly cadence.

For developers and AI creators, Ross is another example of how the next generation of AI agents may not just answer questions — they may actually work inside specialized professional environments.
