57% of Companies Are Building AI Agents, But Data Is the Bottleneck

AI agents are quickly moving from experiments to real business applications, but a new enterprise report suggests that companies face a major challenge before these systems can deliver reliable results: data readiness.

According to the report, 57.3% of organizations are already piloting or running AI agents. These AI systems can perform tasks with limited human intervention, including customer support, data analysis, coding, research, workflow automation and business operations.

However, only 8.4% of organizations say their data is production-ready for AI agents. The gap becomes even more significant because 76% of organizations identify data quality and trust as one of their top three barriers to adopting AI agents successfully.

This means companies can have access to powerful AI models, but the models may still struggle if the information they receive is incomplete, outdated, inconsistent or difficult to access.

For example, a company could build an AI agent to automatically answer customer questions. If customer records are stored across different systems, contain outdated information or have inconsistent formats, the agent may provide incorrect answers or fail to complete tasks accurately.

The problem is not necessarily the AI model itself. AI agents need access to the right information, context and permissions to perform actions safely and reliably.

This is changing the way businesses should think about AI adoption. Instead of focusing only on which AI model is the smartest, companies may also need to improve their databases, data pipelines, APIs, security controls and data governance.

The trend is particularly important for developers and students. Skills such as databases, APIs, cloud computing, cybersecurity and data engineering could become increasingly valuable as AI agents become more common in businesses.

For Indian businesses, the message is simple: building an AI agent is only one part of automation. Preparing trustworthy data may be the bigger challenge.

As AI agents continue moving into real-world workflows, companies with clean, accessible and trusted data could have a significant advantage over organizations that adopt AI without fixing their underlying data problems.
